Character Name: Osiris
Age: Looks to be in his 50s. In linear time lived he is several centuries old. In time that he has experienced in the Vex network… many thousands of years old. He cannot make anything easy.
Canon: Destiny (the game)
Canon Point: During Immolant Part 2 after visiting the Dreadnaught, but before heading down into the caverns beneath Luna.
CRAU: The Ton CR
History: https://www.destinypedia.com/Osiris
Personality: To people who don't know him well, Osiris comes across as arrogant, narcissistic, condescending, self-important, and kind of a rude asshole, albeit an extremely clever one.
This is all correct. He is. But that barely scratches the surface.
Osiris is a man who is deeply devoted to defending humanity and he has a strong sense of morality – even in his earliest days, he despised the Lightbearers who became Warlords, wasting their immortality on empowering only themselves. He is also one of the very earliest Lightbearers to advocate on behalf of the Eliksni, seeing them as refugees rather than the existential threat to be destroyed that many did. Even when the Last City exiled him, Osiris did his best to help them where he could, and was constantly working to find a way to save them from the coming Darkness. He even set aside his plans for the future that he wanted with his lover, Saint-14, until such time as the City was safe – a future that they both knew might never come.
His arrogance is not misplaced – he is genuinely one of the most powerful Lightbearers to ever exist, using the Light to do things that no-one else has managed, such as creating reflections to carry out work for him. He is also extremely intelligent and creative. However, his arrogance tends to take the form of him seeing himself as uniquely responsible for keeping the universe working rather than an arrogance that expects worship (in fact, he really would rather people not worship him). He has high standards that he holds people to, but the standards he holds himself to are even higher (and as Sagira says, no-one meets his standards, not even himself). He never feels as though he is enough. He fears wasted potential and lack of purpose, and measures his worth based on how much good he can do and how useful he is.
This also leads him to be prone to obsession – when he finds a focus, he will pursue it doggedly, often to the detriment of himself and his relationships with others. His obsession with the Vex and the Dakrness led to him focusing attention and resources on hunting them instead of handling the day-to-day matters of the City when he was Vanguard Commander, and his eventual branding as a heretic and being exiled.
He is extremely blunt, but while some of it is just him not caring about other people's feelings, a good part of it is also often that he considers it the most reasonable way of communicating. This made him extremely unsuited to politics and caused a lot of strife when he was part of the leadership of the City – why should he waste time on meaningless pleasantries and trying to soothe other people's sensibilities when there are much greater threats at hand? Sometimes he also just doesn't realise when he's being overbearing or demanding or rude, and when he does (sometimes) he can step back and apologise.
Needless to say, Osiris is also very impatient.
He is a man who cares deeply, though he is bad at showing it. When someone has earned his trust and friendship, he can be extremely devoted. He bears the scars of his mentor, Felwinter's death even centuries later, even going so far as to threaten and rebuke Rasputin, the Warmind over it. When he discovers that his lover, Saint, had died in the Infinite Forest (which he blames himself for), he immediately dedicates himself to figuring out a way to bring him back to life. This involved him creating a functioning time machine. Using his Echoes (sentient copies of himself) to try to find Saint, the failure to find him drives several of the Echoes to madness and suicide in despair, all of which Osiris felt as though it was his own.
He has a quick temper and is difficult to get close to, but he is also capable of great kindness and acts of understanding. He will absolutely destroy himself for his people and those he loves, and often has little regard for his own needs.
Abilities: Osiris is generally viewed to be the most powerful Guardian to exist. While he can be killed or die from various natural causes, he can be resurrected by his Ghost, fully healed. He also doesn’t age.
The Light in Destiny is split into 3 elemental powers: Solar, Void, Arc. As a Warlock, Osiris is able to use these in a variety of ways and to an extremely high level. All of these elements can be used to form grenades, empower melee attacks, and as a Warlock he is able to create ‘rifts’ which can heal himself and others, or empower their weapons and abilities.
Each elemental also has various ‘supers’, which are extremely powerful abilities beyond grenades and melee attacks. It should be noted that while these can usually only be used individually, and often have a cool-down period between them, Osiris is particularly extra and very powerful and skilled, and in-canon has been known to use different supers back to back and at the same time. The man is a show-off!
Solar (Fire):
Osiris can wield two flaming swords and create a ‘Well of Radiance’ which heals, protects, and empowers those within it. He is also able to fly and give himself flaming wings.
Arc (Lightning):
Can form incredibly strong bolts of lightning at people. And his rifts create Arc souls which follow people around and shoot.
Void (Purple):
Can throw a huge bomb of void energy, leech health from enemies, and also make himself invisible.
Osiris is also able to create both Reflections and Echoes - Reflections are glowing golden copies of himself which can explore places and fight on his behalf, carry out simple tasks, pass on messages etc. He can also shift his consciousness between them as needed in order to view the place they’re exploring, fight where they are etc.
Echoes are similar, copies of himself, but much much more advanced - enough that they are almost conscious people themselves, able to feel emotions, are able to perform much more complex tasks and make choices. Also able to go insane and kill themselves. Osiris is able to feel their emotions and see what they are seeing and it’s implied that can take quite the emotional toll on him. These are not a manifestation of his Light - they are created using a Darkness power similar to ‘Taking’ (as he says: ‘reserved for Taken Kings’).
He also has prophetic visions.
In more mundane abilities, Osiris is a scientist and scholar, and has published many papers and books. He is a genuinely good teacher if he is in the right mindset for it (which he has not been for many years). He's an excellent hacker, having lived within the Vex network and their giant prediction engine, the Infinite Forest, for many many years, learning how to manipulate and use it for his own ends, even taking control of it from the Vex when Panoptes was defeated.
He is also pretty good with a gun, and a decent pilot.
He will be coming in with his Ghost, Sagira! She is a fragment of the Traveller and takes the form of a sentient drone-type creature. She is able to resurrect Osiris if he dies, scan items, hack computers and machinery, perform extremely fast calculations, and sass the hell out of him.
Inventory: Osiris will arrive with Sagira, his clothing including Sunbracers and Lunafaction boots. He will also be bringing his Vex key-cubes and his scout rifle.
Eternal Reward: Osiris wants to be able to live happily with Saint because their people are safe and at peace and they don't have to fight anymore.
Goals/Ideas: Osiris is likely to want to investigate the situation - being dead is not something he is unfamiliar with, but this idea of an afterlife is not something he has experienced before and, as always, he is going to want to know everything he can and be extremely sceptical of everything he hears. There's going to be a lot of research an experimentation in his future. He's going to be a pain in the ass to the authorities because he is extremely determined.
One of the biggest things for Osiris is opening up enough to form connections and earn Anima - I'm interested to see how he reacts to people and who he takes to, because he is not the easiest person to get along with, and is genuinely short of connections, especially positive ones.
